About the Collared Dove (Streptopelia decaocto)
The Collared Dove is native to warm temperate Asia and has since been introduced to the United States in the 1980s. The collared dove is distinguished by the black half-ring around the mid-section of the neck. These birds rely on bird feeders and crop fields for survival in North America and, unlike other birds produce their own protein-rich milk for their young, unlike most species that rely on insects for a protein source. Another cool fact about these birds is that they are one of few birds to drink head down meaning they submerge their bill sucking in the water source.
